Tan Hill Inn near Keld, North Yorkshire

This is Britains highest inn at 1732 feet above sea level and lies about Halfway along the Pennine way between Edale and Kirk Yelthholm. The feeling of Solitude here is immense and the scenery is beautiful. It is very isolated about 15 to 20 minutes drive from the nearest village at Keld. Or 45 - 55 minutes from Richmond on the eastern side of the pennines or Brough on the Western side of the Pennines. To see details of how to get to Tan Hill by road either see Multimap or visit the Tan Hill Website for the appropriate maps. The main A66 that links the A1 at Scotch Corner with the M6 at Penrith making its crossing of the Stainmore Gap can be seen in the distance from Tan Hill but to get to it by road is a long way round. There is an infrequent Bus service that goes along the A66. To visit the pub alight where the Pennine way crosses the road, the Pub can be reached in about an Hour to an Hour and a Half on foot. If you fancy an evening here as well as the accommodation you may camp around the pub usually at a small Charge. This is possibly one of Britain's highest campsites.

The picture below Shows the pennine way heading south to Keld and eventually the Nags Head at Edale the official start or finish of the route depending on whether you are walking north or south. It would take you about 2 to 3 weeks to walk to Edale.

North Yorkshire sign in the pool room at Tan Hill

Some Years ago no one really knew what county Tan hill was really in. Cumbria, County Durham and North Yorkshire all laid claim. Then much to many peoples delight the thorny issue was decided and with much ado it was officially placed in North Yorkshire as the sign in the Pool room now proudly proclaims, and leaves nobody in any doubt as to which county they are in.
