Baslow is situated next to the famous Duke of Devonshires Chatsworth Estate in Derbyshire. Baslow can be reached from Sheffield by bus services 240 First Mainline and X18 First PMT South Yorkshire Peak Explorer tickets are valid to Baslow visit SYPTE for times. Both of these services carry on to Bakewell where buses from Manchester, Stockport, Buxton, Derby, Matlock and many other places connect into these services to bring you to Baslow. Baslow - Chatsworth House
To start this walk head for the for the bridge over the River Derwent. This can be seen from the bus stop in the center of Baslow (See Picture above). Cross the bridge and take the lane on your right past a row of thatched cottages You will soon come to a footpath between two walls. Follow this path you will shortly pass onto the Chatsworth Estate. The river Derwent will be winding its way through the Chatsworth estate on your right hand side. Keep following the path straight on. You will pass a small gate house called White Lodge Keep following the path straight on Chatsworth house can be seen up ahead on your left hand side You will shortly pass a cricket pitch on your right hand side. You will eventually reach a bridge known as Bower across the river. At any point from White lodge to this bridge you can make a diversion to Chatsworth House there is a shop and Cafe here The House and Gardens are open to the Public. Chatsworth Huose to Bakewell
To continue the walk cross over the bridge and take the path imeadiatly on your left hand side. The river is now on your left hand side. Good views of Chatsworth House can be seen across the River. The path follows the river. You will pass a weir on the river and after this a semi derelict building on your right hand side. If at this point you would like to visit the Devonshire Arms pub at Beeley stay on the path by the river you will come to a bridge with traffic lights, cross the bridge and then take the path immediatley on the right continue down this path until it comes out on the road. follow the road for a short distance until the pub can be seen on your left hand side. To get back to the main walk take the same route back as far as the bridge. again cross the bridge but stay on the road the road shortly makes a sharp right hand turn at this bend there is a path that carries straight on up the hillside through some woods follow this path and it will bring you out at Chatsworth garden center. A visit to Beeley should add no more than 50 minutes to this walk. For those of you not wishing to visit Beeley at the semi deralict building turn right up the hillside just after this building you will pass through a gate onto the road. Cross the road and walk up the road that is directly across from you. This will bring you past a car park and to the entrance to Chatsworth garden center. Continue past the entrance to the garden center along the tarmacked lane you will shortly come to a sharp left turn at Calton Lees at this turn there is an unsurfaced lane that goes straight on follow the unsurfaced lane. You are now climbing up towards the summit of this walk. The view behind you of Beeley moor behind you gets better. You will eventually pass Calton Houses. Shortly after Calton Houses you will come to a gate. Go through the gate and turn left, Shortly after this just before the path passes between two clumps of trees take the path on your right up the hillside. this will shortly bring you to another path onto which you turn left. you are now on the path that will take you across the summit of this walk. The area is now open you gradually climb and pass through two gates as you go carrying straight on along the path. the path is fairly distinct. You eventually reach the summit after a final sharp short rise next to a clump of trees. From the summit follow the path down you will pass through a stile onto an unsurfaced lane that will bring you out onto a tarmacked road at Ball Cross farm. Turn left here and follow the road downhill it does a Zig Zag as it makes its way down the hill side to Bakewell. As you follow the road down you will pass Bakewell golf club and then Pass over the Old abandoned Former Midland railway that once carried trains from London St Pancras to Manchester at the old Bakewell Railway station. The old track bed now forms part of the Monsal trail. Continue down the road and this will bring you out at the bridge in Bakewell. Cross over the Bridge and you are in Bakewell town center. Here are all the amenities of any town You can also buy the original Bakewell Puddings. Visit The Old Original Bakewell Pudding Shop. From here you can catch busess back to Baslow and Sheffield and many other places All the tickets mentioned in the Introduction are valid to Bakewell.
